MIRADOR DEL RÍO – THE WINDOW TO THE CHINIJO ARCHIPELAGO
Situated at an altitude of over 470 metres, the Mirador del Río is one of Lanzarote’s most impressive spots. From here, you can overlook the entire northern coast of the island and enjoy a privileged view of the Chinijo Archipelago, consisting of La Graciosa, Montaña Clara and Alegranza.
Designed by César Manrique, this space masterfully combines architecture with the landscape. Its structure is carved into the volcanic rock and is completely integrated with the environment, offering a perfect example of harmony between art and nature.
The viewpoint is located on the old military site of the “Batería del Río”, and Manrique transformed it into a bright space, with large curved windows that frame the views of the ocean. In its interior, white, wrought iron and volcanic stone combine to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
From the panoramic terrace, you can see how the sea separates Lanzarote from La Graciosa, a narrow channel that gives the place its name: “El Río” (The River). It is one of the most beautiful natural viewpoints in all of Europe.

EXPERIENCE AND SURROUNDINGS OF MIRADOR DEL RÍO
The experience at Mirador del Río begins long before you arrive. The road winds through volcanic landscapes and cliffs, gradually revealing the immensity of northern Lanzarote. Upon arrival, the silence, the height and the panoramic view convey a sense of calm and freedom that is difficult to describe.
Inside you will find a cafeteria with large windows, where you can enjoy a coffee while watching La Graciosa and the small islands of the archipelago. There is also a souvenir shop with local products and a small exhibition on the history of the site.
Just outside the viewpoint, you can stop at other free panoramic points, ideal for taking photographs or watching the sunrise. It is also an excellent starting point for visiting the Corona Volcano or exploring the Jameos del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes area.
On clear days, you can clearly distinguish the different islands of the archipelago and the colour contrasts between the sea and the volcanic rock. At sunset, golden tones tint the cliffs of the Risco de Famara, offering one of Lanzarote’s most impressive images.
Tip: wear comfortable clothes and something warm, as the wind usually blows strongly in this high area. Try to arrive early to avoid queues and enjoy the views more peacefully.
