LA GERIA – THE WINE HEART OF LANZAROTE
La Geria is one of the most unique landscapes in the world. This volcanic valley, located in the centre of Lanzarote, combines the power of nature with human creativity. Here, vineyards grow on volcanic ash, protected by semi-circular walls of black stone, creating an unmistakable scene.
This ancestral farming method takes advantage of night-time humidity and protects the vines from the wind. The result is a unique wine with a protected designation of origin and a volcanic flavour that reflects the purest essence of Lanzarote.
The landscape of La Geria is the result of the effort of generations of farmers who, following the 18th-century eruptions, found a way of life in the most inhospitable terrain. Its beauty has been recognised internationally and today it forms part of the La Geria Natural Park, protected for its ecological and cultural value.
Walking through La Geria is an unforgettable experience: a sea of volcanic cones and vineyards in perfect harmony with the environment. It is, without doubt, one of Lanzarote’s most representative images.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO IN LA GERIA
La Geria is much more than a valley of vineyards: it is an invitation to explore Lanzarote’s winemaking history and tradition. Along its main road, you will find numerous wineries (bodegas) offering guided tours and tastings of wines such as Volcanic Malvasia, recognised worldwide.
The landscape, with its volcanic cones and crater crops, looks like something from another planet. It is ideal for exploring by car, bicycle, or even on foot, enjoying the silence, fresh air, and views of the volcanoes of Timanfaya National Park.
Among the most prominent wineries are Bodegas Rubicón, El Grifo —the oldest in the Canary Islands— and La Geria, where you can sample local wines accompanied by cheeses and local produce. The hospitality and passion of its producers make every visit an authentic and personal experience.
Furthermore, from certain viewpoints and trails, you can enjoy panoramic views that combine the green of the vines with the black lava and blue sky. There is no better place to understand how Lanzarote has successfully co-existed with its volcanic nature.
Tip: Visit La Geria in the morning when the sun highlights the landscape’s contrasts. And if you can, visit during the festivities of San Lorenzo, when the Traditional Harvest (Vendimia) is celebrated with music and outdoor tastings.
